Dear Community Interns,

On behalf of our organization I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Pacific Community Networks Association.  We are looking forward to your joining us as a community intern.

To help you become more familiar with your new position, I've created this on-line orientation guide including a job description, access to a discussion forum to share ideas with other community interns and a calendar to keep you on track.

You will be working closely with your region's Network Coordinator who you will have met during the interview process.  Your Network Coordinator will ensure you have a proper workstation and will be able to answer a number of your questions.  You can also contact me at any time by email (bev@prcn.org) or by telephone at 1-888-727-2226.

Rate:  $12 per hour (480 hours)
Title:   Community Intern
Job Description:  To work directly with your Regional Network Coordinator to do the following:

  1. Research funding opportunities by either
    a) providing support to the Regional Network Coordinator so he/she has time to research funding or
    b) research funding opportunities for the Network
  2. Identify potential corporate support for the Network in your region
  3. Develop a Community Resource Inventory
  4. Grant / Proposal writing

What is CAP?

Industry Canada's Community Access Program (CAP) gives thousands of Canadians affordable access to the Internet in places like schools, community centres and libraries. It provides access to those people who might not have computers or Internet access in their homes or workplaces.

How will I research funding opportunities?
The Pacific Community Networks Association will provide an on-line searchable database of Canadian Funding opportunities.  These funding opportunities will either be Government programs or Corporate Foundations.  This database was compiled by two Industry Canada Co-op students - Nijjy Potikanon and Miranda Cai.

How do I develop a Community Resource Inventory?

You can develop an inventory of Community Resources by researching and compiling information on resources in your community such as:

  1. List of non-profit organizations in your region
  2. List of Government agencies and offices
  3. List of businesses and corporations - you can usually get this kind of information from your local Chamber of Commerce office or city hall
  4. Name and contact information for your Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, Community Futures etc.
  5. List of community or regional foundations
  6. Name and contact information for the region's MLA, MP and other government officials
  7. Contact information for your local media (newspapers, radio and TV.  Please include the contact information for sending a press release to the media outlet.

How do I write a Grant Proposal?

Each of the funding opportunities will provide an overview of the information that is required for each proposal.  We will also provide some samples for you.  Your region's Network Coordinator and myself will be available to assist.
